Ava's Haiti Project
Ava Doner, a grade 8 student at Courtice North Public School wanted to do something for the people of Haiti. Here is her story!
“Last month, a phone call was made to Rickards Arena in Bowmanville asking for the use of the facility to set up a booth for fundraising for the people of Haiti. Mr. Ferguson, the manager at the arena was very kind and quick to reply with a yes! I couldn’t believe it. It was originally in my head when I read in the paper last week of two young grade 8 students in Mississauga who organized a fundraiser for orphans living in Africa impacted by HIV/AIDS. I thought this was a great thing to do and wondered how I could contribute. The next morning I read of the earthquake in Haiti and all of the tragedy that took place there. There was an immediate need to help people who had lost everything there. After getting permission from Mr. Ferguson on Friday night I called a few friends to ask for some help in making posters and helping to set up a booth for that next day. At the arena we raised $2,000.00. I would like to say thank you to all of the people that donated to this cause. The donations will be forwarded on to our MPP of Durham, John O’Toole who will make sure the government will match these donations dollar for dollar. The donations will be sent quickly to Haiti to help ease the suffering of the people. I would like to say thank you to Chantel Potter who helped with the posters and Emma Brown who helped at the booth. Thanks also to friends and family that helped out at the booth and for their support. A special thanks to Mr. Ken Ferguson”.
We would like to say “thank you” to you, Ava, and your friends, who put together a fundraiser in ONE DAY! That should be a challenge to many! Let us know your story and how you are helping to put back together lives so devastated and needing our support!
